I grew up in the country. One day, I was watching this hen play with her baby chicks. They seem to be at play. During play time, mother hen would teach her chicks the way of being a chicken. These chicks learned valuable skills as they kept up with and searched for their mother if they fell behind. The Bible gives us the image of God as mother hen, God gathers, teaches, instructs and protects; but, what if God wants to lead us to still places through play? Remember Luke 13:32-34, when Jesus called Herod a fox and referred to himself as a mother hen? Jesus was casting out demons and healing people. Jesus wanted to usher Israel under the wings of mercy. But Israel would not be not be still enough to hear God’s heart. What if God wants to show us how to be children of the light through our playful searchings for God? In the night time, early morning, anytime really can be prime time for joyful expectations for finding the “I Am”. Finding answers, finding exactly what is needed just when we are in a place of need is a joy. Whenever baby chicks are overly fearful, Mama hen ushers her baby chicks to rest. Below, in Songs of Solomon we see the joy of finally finding the beloved One. May you find joy in your search for the Lover of your Soul! May you find rest.
Solomon 3:1-4
At night on my bed,
I looked for the one I love.
I looked for him, but I could not find him.
I will get up now. I will go around the city,
in the streets and squares.
I will look for the one I love.
I looked for him, but I could not find him.
The watchmen found me as they patrolled the city.
I asked, “Have you seen the one I love?”
As soon as I had left them
I found the one I love.
I held him. I would not let him go
until I had brought him to my mother’s house. I brought him into the room where I was born.
